INTRODUCTION
This book is a study of certain highly evolved spiritual beings known as Masters and collectively as the Hierarchy or Great White Brotherhood.
The origin of the White Brotherhood lies in the dim prehistory of humanity's existence on this planet, but throughout the development of our species its members have observed and occasionally made themselves known to mortals such as ourselves.
We are told they evolved to their present positions by travelling the same road we are taking today, and that they are still in the process of evolving. Furthermore we have the chance of becoming like them, together with the opportunity to enjoy their benefits ~ which includes immortality.
It is very important to them that we do not regard them as a race apart, because they too are members of humanity who have journeyed along the path of evolution we are on now. By thinking of them as the advance party of humankind we will be able to appreciate their desire to report back on what they have found, and what we are approaching.
To illustrate this more clearly I will be describing their changing relationship with humanity throughout its evolution, and show how the progressive development of human beings corresponds with these changes.
The other subject of this book is the spiritual nature of humanity; our evolutionary position now and in the immediate future, and how the benefits of seeking contact with the Masters of Wisdom are particularly advantageous in our present era.
Such information is of little use without advice on how to prepare oneself for contact with the Masters, so a fair amount of instruction is presented here for the guidance of aspirants.

CHAPTER ONE
THE ROLE OF THE MASTERS AS GODS
Before embarking on your journey through the mystical it is essential to understand the nature of your goal. What is it you want from your pursuits into mysticism or occultism? Is it power or knowledge that you hope to find, so others will look up to you, or which you can use to influence people? Or is it wealth, which you imagine can be gained through the exploitation of psychic abilities? I hope not, because the way of the Masters is certainly not for the selfish or profane.
I expect your goal is more likely to be similar to mine, even though you might think of it in a different way, and that is the development of my inner self, or my true essence. My search is for the higher part of my being, which I know is divine as it is part of the Absolute or God, and so links me with all other aspects of His creation. I know that when I have attained this goal I will have achieved as much as I can possibly envisage achieving in this earthly life; and I also understand it is useless to speculate on what I will do then with such a vastly increased spiritual awareness ~ because my lower self or personality, that at present is all I understand by the term 'I', cannot itself appreciate the new goals I will have when my 'I' is my true higher self.
This might appear rather complicated to some of you at the moment, but I will go into a deeper explanation of the term 'I' later on. All I am trying to do here is to define a common goal that should be recognizable as similar to your own, and which will satisfy your yearnings by pointing out a direction for your spiritual desires. My own term for the achievement, and for the roads leading to it, is spiritual development. This is the same as the conscious awakening of one's higher self, and the alignment of the lower self with this divine essence so that one is able to function as a true spiritual being.

CHAPTER TWO
THE PATH TO THE MASTERS
We have completed a general survey of the Hierarchy considered from the Absolute's position and fantastic as it might appear at this stage, I think it will become more acceptable when we have considered our own position in the scheme. By going over similar ground but looking at it through the eyes of humanity, it will be necessary to add a considerable amount of more detailed information, and having the general view already should help to keep your mind fixed on our goal.
Humans have developed as a species out of the animal kingdom, but through our individuality we are now at a unique and far higher evolutionary level.
The individuality we get as a 'first-born' human is the lowest rung on the ladder of humanity's divine evolution, and functions consciously through a personality which is a dim mirrored reflection of the soul, the two being connected by an unconscious link that holds them together.
The personality is the 'first-born' human's 'I', which is the conscious level of awareness that he or she uses in everyday life and considers as 'himself' or ‘herself’. As the individuality progresses through a cycle of lives, this awareness level rises through the sub-planes of the Mental Plane, so that the personality of the average person today is very much nearer to the point of their soul than it was in those far off days of the ‘first-born’.
The soul is a pure part of the Absolute, but it is only a small part of what He has set aside for the individual human. As the personality is but a reflection of the soul, so the soul itself is but a reflection of something far higher and nearer to the Absolute called the monad. This is the true human individuality that exists on far higher Planes than we are aware of, in realms completely incomprehensible to our present mental capacity.

THE MASTERS GUIDE HUMANITY TO MATURITY
I want to progress now into a discussion of the developing relationship between people and their gods throughout the ages, beginning with a brief look at the advent of the modern human. I also want to demonstrate that the various stages of humanity's development have required differing conceptions of the gods, and that the Masters have been instrumental in the formation of these concepts.

CHAPTER FOUR
ENTERING AQUARIUS WITH THE MASTERS
We have seen how the more developed individuals of the human race, who had become the rulers and priest-kings of various nations, discovered the existence of a single God who was responsible for all the natural workings and manifestations of the Universe, including the lives of individual men and women. This idea, of course, is not far removed from our present concept of the Absolute.

CHAPTER FIVE
PRACTICAL APPROACHES TO THE HIERARCHY
Before proceeding with the main topic of this chapter, which is essentially a more practical consideration of contemporary methods of approaching the Hierarchy, I must go over one point we have already discussed, and that lies at the root of such procedures making it of the utmost importance. This is to reaffirm our understanding of spiritual development.

CHAPTER SIX
PRACTICAL PUPILSHIP AND DEVELOPMENT
Whether or not you are prepared to adopt the procedure of building a symbolic Master as outlined in the previous chapter, if you seriously wish to attempt the Aquarian method of development then in some way and at some time, you must contemplate the real possibility of a Master who is considering your suitability for pupilship.
The form this contemplation will take is a matter that should be dictated by your inner yearnings, for instance whether you feel devoted towards the Masters, or whether you seek inspiration through them; but however you feel in this respect you will find it easier to direct your contemplation towards a divine concept or symbol. It is for this reason that I gave the preliminary exercises in the last chapter, and later I will describe a set of symbols that can be used to represent the Masters associated with each of the Seven Rays.

CHAPTER SEVEN
FURTHER ESOTERIC MATTERS: LIFE, DEATH, KARMA, DEVAS, ANGLES & THE SEVEN RAYS
Once you are a pupil you have become part of the active rather than the passive life stream of the Universe. With the realization of your position and the sense of security it inevitably brings, you should accept and put to good use those spiritual realizations which directly concern you, and at the same time keep an interested awareness in matters distant from you, especially those of cosmic magnitude. Try to feel the truth in such things through your intuition, but keep a balanced view without either believing too strongly or being too critical of things which are beyond reasonable proof.
